Location
In Central part of BiH, 4 kilometers from Teslic town, 230 meters above the sea level, 44o34’ 45’’ north and 17o
53’ 24’’ east, located is Spa Vrucica. It is connected with regional road with Banja Luka and Sarajevo.The Spa is situated in green valley, surrounded with small hills and mountains of Borja and Vlasic. The valley is divided by small river Usora and Grabovac creek which is passing by the Spa.

- Classification: This water belongs to a group of calcium-sodium-hydro carbonated-chloride-fluoride-carbon-sour, hyper-thermal mineral waters.
- AFFECTS: carbon-dioxide (CO2) from the water and gas baths, irritates the skin thermo-receptors and causes hyperemia with vasodilatation of the capillaries, arterioles and arteries, and causes significant blood distribution through organism. The amount of blood that circulates is increased approximately for 30%. Systole strengthens, and diastole lengthens, while the hart „relaxes“, coronary circulation of the blood improves, as well as the metabolism of the muscle. The level of catecholamine decreases and blocks beta and energetic receptors of myocardium. By hypothalamus and hypothalamic-hypostasis complex it decreases the increased functions of thyroid gland; it increases the lowered glicocardicoide functions of adrenals, as well as androgen and oestrogen functions of sex thyroids. If you drink this water 10-30 min before the meal, the water stimulates the secretion of gastric juices , and if is taken 1 hour before meal inhibitory effect happens, so it is required to use it for hyperacidities. This water also intensifies the biligenesis in the liver by showing the holeretic and holagognic effects. Hydrostatic thrust and hydrostatic pressure are used for different hydrokinetic therapeutic procedures. Expectoration is stimulated by inhalation of aerosols. It lowers the level of glucose in blood. If you drink this water it quickly recompenses the lost amount of liquid and minerals.
- USE: This water is used for drinking, for use in mineral baths, for hydrotherapy in the swimming pools, for aerosols inhalation and CO2 gas baths.
- PRESCRIBED DOSES: 500 ml per day of cold mild warm water is taken for gastric difficulties, depending on the effect that is wanted to be achived during the three week stay in the spa. Carbon-sour baths, indifferent or hypothermal, are used 8-16 min per day up to umbilical, mamilar or clavicular line. Hypothermal baths or a swimming pool is used for hydrokinezy therapy up to 15 min per day. 1 x 15 minutes for aerosol. Gas baths are used 10 / 15 minutes per day during which the blood pressure has to be checked.
- INDICATONS: Patients who suffered a hart attack, or patients with angina pectoris, as well as patients who are recovering from the operation of coronary blood vessels, compensated hart diseases without arrhythmias, increased blood pressure, diseases of peripheral artery blood vessels, after injury conditions, conditions after corrective operations of joints, rheumatic diseases, discus hernias that have been operated, paresis and paralyses of peripheral nerves, inflammations of stomach mucous membrane, stomach and duodenum ulcer, liver and gall diseases, diabetes, bronchitis and gout.
- CONTRAINDICATIONS: Decompenstaed hart diseases with arrhythmias, infective diseases, malign diseases, active lungs’ TBC and febrile conditions.
Vulnerability of the hydrologic basin
Thermal waters come from the natural source located in insection below the hill with average amount of 7.5 lit/sec in past 10 years. The area around the source is rural, some 4 km away from the nearest town of Teslic. In the immediate area around the spa there are some 1000 inhabitants located in 6 scattered villages. There are no any industrial activities which can affect in any way the water source or waste disposal sites. Minor agricultural activities are present in the area with no affect to the water source. There are no specific studies in the past related to the vulnerability of the hydrologic basin.
Rehabilitation
It is based on doctor specialist examination; the regime of thermal
treatment is tailored for each patient. Hospital treatment, besides the full
board in the hotel is composed out of mineral bath in the pools and bath tubes,
bathing in CO2 baths, underwater massage, paraffin bath, therapeutic bath,
electric therapy, exercises, massage and other therapies. The nutrition is organized in full collaboration with modern dietology and is adapted to every kind of disease. Expert
medicinal teams are taking care 24 hours a day about the medical condition of
the patients and hotel guests. At the end of every treatment each patient
receives expert opinion about the health condition. Pension with balneal
program is composed out of full board in the hotel, doctor examinations and

Water characteristics
Alkaline and high
alkaline waters are rarely to find in the nature, and that is why so little
known about them comparing to other kind of waters. But, in spite of that
fact, they have been used for ages in health purposes.
The first annunciation connected to existence of high alkaline waters have been given by American geologists (Barnes and co-workers, year 1967). They described three resources of this kind in California.Doing hydro-geologic researches in spa Kulasi in year 1973, Mr. Djerkovic has done first physical-chemical analysis that he introduced public science world with during the year of 1974.All empiric and science observations claim that this type of the water has very favourable influence on skin deceases. In addition, this water has diuretic influence and also helps with kidney sand dislodging.The only one spa with these waters that has been built in these regions is spa Kulasi (high alkaline waters = 11.40-11.85). As a matter of fact, it’s not known there is any other similar spa in the world, which is the reason why we rely only on experience from this spa when we’re talking about alkaline waters. Location
In the middle of a
field, next to a small town Laktasi, hot mineral
water comes out as rich in radon and other minerals as few other spas in our
countries as well as in Europe are (44o 57’ 29” north, 17o 18’ 3” east).Laktasi Spa is situated in a quiet and attractive natural
ambient, surrounded by green area, trees and other park vegetation. It has a
long tradition in using thermal water whereas tourists and visitors can have
full medical treatment covering a set of therapeutic procedures conducted by
professional and highly educated staff.
In its facilities Laktasi Spa offers two indoor pools and five baths and
patients have the opportunity to have a bath in a spring which is in one of the pools. Today’s Spa spring was found in 1930, and the first pool was
constructed in 1931, and a few more with bath in between were constructed in
1937. After the Second World War premises were built to accept guests and the
sick, pavilions were constructed afterwards as well as barracks. The Spa had 38
rooms and 80 beds available. A car camp was constructed in the most beautiful
part in 1962, two pools, a huge Olympic pool and an outdoor pool for children
(in the year 1973), which were filled with thermal water.In the beginning of 1982, B Category hotel “San” was
constructed with indoor pools and a medical block, which created conditions for
tourist to come to Laktasi on holidays, for treatment
and recreation throughout the whole year.
The same year Laktasi was awarded the prize “Golden Deer” for quality
services as the highest ranked continental tourist resort in competition with
twelve towns from Ex Yugoslavia.Laktasi Spa has been privatized recently and reconstructed and
one more hotel has been constructed in the vicinity of the spa, the hotel “Milka”, having very good equipment. The hotel “San” has
been reconstructed recently; the Olympic pool which is 50 meters far from the
Spa is being reconstructed as well.

Healing characteristics of spa water are confirmed by
appropriate institutes from Vien, Prague, Ljubljana and Zagreb,
and the latest analysis is made by Rehabilitation Institute
(Balneal-climatology Department) from Belgrade
(expert team consisted of M.Sc. Med Milos Obrenovic, Prod. Ph. D. Med. Gordana
Popovic and Prim. M. Sc. Pharm. Ljiljana Zivadinovic).The water temperature is 30.4 ˚C, it is clear, without
colour, no flavour nor odour. Profusion of the spring is secured throughout the
year and on average amounts to 41.2 l/s.On the basis of the mentioned water quality, it is used for
mineral water therapy as an additional medical treatment, through bath
(bathtubs and pools) and drinking. Apart from that, the spa offers services of
all physical therapies, which are used today.

Location
Slatina Spa is situated in a tourist place bearing the same name, twelve kilometres towards the south from the centre of Laktasi, at 206 m above sea level, 44o 8’ 47” north and 19o 11’ 47” east. Main characteristics of the place are clear air, abundant springs of thermal/mineral water reaching the temperature of 420C and springs of drinkable water known under the name “Kiseljaci”. Slatina is one remote, not polluted by any industry and a quiet tourist resort with long tradition in spa and tourism.

Services
Spa is currently a part of the institute for rehabilitation “Dr Miroslav Zotovic” so that visitors to the spa have an entire medical treatment available comprising a set of various forms of therapy under the control of professional medical staff. Within the spa premises there are two indoor pools and 12 baths that are available to visitors every day from May to October. In winter time, one pool and two baths are open in the hospital premises for hydro massage.Besides rehabilitation, visitors are offered various possibilities for recreation comprising sport activities (volley ball outdoor, table tennis, basket ball…etc.), walking through nature, visits to historical monuments, hunting, fishing and the like.In terms of accommodation capacities, the Spa offers 100 beds in two separate buildings, whereas visitors have the hotel Slatina with modern equipment and 58 beds, as well as over 200 beds in private accommodation.
Hotel “Slatina” is located in the spa resort bearing the same
name, 12 kilometres far from Laktasi. It was
constructed in 1992, formerly it had been planned to be built as a clinic for
sport trauma treatments but the circumstances changed the plan so that a
modern and well equipped hotel was constructed. It has 17 double rooms and
six rooms with three beds and three suites. There are baths for hydro
massage, two restaurants and three conference rooms.
Apart from the Spa facilities, only a few meters away, in the
centre of Slatina park,
there is the restaurant “Park” with 120 places, offering visitors a wide
assortment of food as well as specialties of national cuisine.

SPA GATA
Location
Located near Grmec and
Pljesevica
Mountains (near Bihac town), it is surrounded by rivers Una and Korana – 44o 48’ 43” north and 15o 51’ 50” east). Medical features
of waters in Gata were known in Roman time, as well
as during Turkish occupation. First written
document in which this unusually healthy water was described dates from 13th century.Todays spa (first object of it)
has been built during year 1900.
The municipality of Bihac is situated in the north-west
part of B&H. Its area is 689 km2. From B&H side, it
borders on the municipalities of Cazin, Bosanska Krupa, Bosanski Petrovac and Drvar, and from Croatian side, on Donji Lapac, Korenica and Slunj, which also enables cooperation related to tourist
offer of well known National park Plitvica lakes,
which is visited by 1 million tourist per year.
Water is mineral (1 692 mg / l) and there is presence of Ca, Na, sulphates, hydrocarbon and chloral. In addition, it was found more then 20 ingredients from the group of humeral vitamins. Water is homotherm kind (temperature: 36-39.3oC), Ph 7-7.5, but it’s little radioactive due to the presence of uran and radon.Hardness: 675-850.

How to reach spa Mljecanica
The center can be reached using different roads:
- Highway Zagreb - Belgrade, turn to Gradiska in Okucani, cross the bridge over Sava, go to Kozarska Dubica. There are 58 kilometers from Gradiska to Spa Mljecanica.
- From the Banja Luka airport "Mahovljani" via Gradiska and Kozarska Dubica to the Spa Mljecanica there are 70 kilometers.
- From Banja Luka via Prijedor to the Spa Mljecanica there are 80 kilometers.
- From Banja Luka via Gradiska and Kozarska Dubica to Spa Mljecanica there are 101 kilometers.
Water characteristics:
The main motto of the Spa Mljecanica is “The nature answers with the health”, because the natural, sulfate-sulfide, more than 5000 years old water is used. The first certificate for its healing effects was issued in Vienna in 1924.Water age: approx. 5000 years.

Study visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina was organized during period 03-06 Dec 2007. Twelve (12) members Italian delegation has visited four (4) out of six (6) spas due to the time framework (time limit) of the visit: Vrucica, Slatina, Laktasi and Kulasi. After presentation and field trip (visiting of the plants), delegation has been informed about present issues as well as with plans for the future, in all visited spas.

STUDY VISIT TO ITALY– MAY 2008
Six months later, Study visit to Italy was organized as well. Five participants from BiH accompanied by ARDA NW representative, together with project partner representatives from Serbia visited Italy and spent five working days in different locations covered by the project. In total, eight (8) spas and one (1) wellness hotel have been visited, in addition to the meeting with the Provincial Government of Ascoli Piceno and press conference in Caramanico Terme. The purpose of this study visit was to establish and create even closer connection to our Italian project partners, and what is more important, to exchange the ideas, experience and knowledge which is considered one of the most important goals of the Thermalis project in order to start improving and extending the services in spas in the region.
